Speaking of British industry, see below, I’m working with a London institution sourcing only UK designed and made furniture. There is an active and seemingly growing group of designer-makers out there, adding to well-known/well-established companies like HitchMylius, SCP and Modus, using home-grown resources and supported by furniture suppliers and the design press. I’d be interested to know if BIS (Department for Business, Innovation and Skills) have policy in place to assist and defend this manufacturing – vital as a partner to design education and practice, to promoting innovative production methods and to encouraging apprenticeships, which all contribute to the economic and social strength of local communities. Conversations with some of the newer businesses reveal a pressing temptation to move production elsewhere.
